So, I was wondering what all of you out here think are good rates and platforms currently, which are MT-friendly.
I personally think that a flat rate of INR 1 for VRE and INR 2 for manual transcription for day-shift HBT DU are decent rates to start with. Regarding platforms, considering whatever little exposure I have had to a few, I would rather work on EditScript or the old fashioned way via FTP.
Of course, there are many variables here to consider which change from company to company like perks, allowances, dictators, targets, shifts, etc. and different MTs too have their priorities/conveniences in choosing one thing over the other, but I think everyone's opinions will help evolve a consensus from which all can benefit, and maybe even rethink on their hard-and-fast views. Rate is important, but good rates do not guarantee good payout at the end of the month. In most of the platforms, job pool is not completely visible. Let me agree Rs. 1 for VRE and Rs. 2 for transcription is good. For the first month it is okay. In the second month or third month, they says jobs are less due to day light savings. Take another account. Then u have to start fresh, obtaining DSP. Where is the chance of earning. They give slabs if u do more than 20 thousand lines, it is Rs. 1.10, but there is no guarantee of jobs available. They advertise we want 20-25 good mt and they want vendors, but the fact is in most cases they do not have lines. It is simply a plan to acquire a new account. Recently Nuance Vice president has stated in Deccan Hearald new paper Karnataka edition, the starting earning potential is 20-25K and it can go up to 70K. How many of them are drawing this figure in Nuance no body knows. That is the reason mtforum admin is telling newbies, do not join MT because it is empty. All i have to say is that there will be no dearth of work if you give 98.5% accuracy consistently, because no employer in his sane state of mind would restrict the work to a high-quality QA.. I can guarantee this about Nuance because they have a good policy of encouraging the talents to go to the maximum limit. If the employer is not giving enough work it means the company is black-listed by the provider for quality issues and so they are sending less work, which means its time to jump the company. I know people who earn 60k pm individually and couples who earn more than 1 lac per month jointly. So, there is no use quibbling about MT or its future because your future in MT lies in your hand, i.e. the quality you give, which will fetch you more work and money because its all about giving quality, whether he is a king or a beggar, the real talent gets paid. So, all those intellectuals who are doing thesis about the future of MTs should better concentrate on quality which make them sell like hot cakes and will fetch them more work and money U need to understand your own words apple is apple and Nuance is nuisance. Every body knows how auditing is done by Nuance and they are good manipulators of accuracy.

Regarding the newpaper report that appeared in Deccan Herald, a Bangalore based newspaper, I think it is completely false information given by Nuance vice president. There is no chance of 20-25K of earning at the starting level of an MT as I am getting only Rs 15,000 maximum/month working as an home MT after 7 years of experience in the MT field. I am doing manual transcription and the rate I am getting is 0.95 paise/line and after about 10 hours working per day I am able to do only 600 lines maximum because I am getting only very tough dictations. I advice the newcomers to this field do not fall a prey to this field which is nothing but a field of slavery. Nuance is almost 90% VRS and 10% trans. So, I am really surprised you are doing manual trans, also considering your 7 years of experience

As far as i know, the quality audit is a transparent process where both edited and transcribed lines are shown with the correction...and what do you mean my manipulators of accuracy.. if you type: "The patient is taking insulin" while it is dictated "The patient is not taking insulin" that means a critical error and you can lose your job. Can I then argue that just because of omitting one simple, careless, stupid word, i was thrown out by nuance... it is just that MT is not GT it is an error sensitive field where even a 0.1 difference in medication dosage can kill a patient

Best rate and platform would be Rs. 1.30/2.60 on Editscript.
Another would be Rs. 500 note on color printer.

I am living in village and do not have proper and good internet connection and that is why I have not tried working on VRS accounts of other companies which require a second broadband connection as backup. After going through the NTS website where there is a facility to check the potential earning of a candidate there is no much hope of earning at the initial stages because they need most of the work to be sent direct to the client which is almost impossible to the newcomers to the MT field.

Edit Reason: added few lines
)
I have been in this damn industry for more than 13 years and it is getting worse day by day. Rates have in fact fallen and work expectations in terms of lines and quality have increased. Mantra of the companies is: Get more work done and pay less. NTS is a big liar. I came to know that many accounts of theirs are going EMR and there is going to be a big struggle in NTS as the pay is based on linecount and quality. New comers do not ever join this industry and people who are already in this industry and are less than 30 years of age, it is time you try to shift to some other industry even if pay is less .

LOLWA....
NTS is THE reason for downward spiral of MT with their voice recognition software. A loss of few million lines would not make an iota of difference to this GENDA of MT. It has eaten all other behemoths including Medquist, EMDAT, Dictaphone, Bayscribe, and what not.

let's imagine you are a software professional... can you say this same argument to your employer.. quality is the cornerstone for this industry or any US based industry.. even a private company in India will throw you out if you are not earning for them. ... anyway you must be already knowing how people are uncremoniously thrown out from IT companies in thousands with just a few hours' notice and no explanation on why they are sacked. By your attitude you are best fit for a govt job and earn from bribes rather than hard work. I really wonder what a common man thinks about MT industry.... is this a time pass job where you just earn a few bucks where you dont get job anywhere else?????? If you do not have consistent quality, you cannot get a job in MT industry even if you are the president of US

Looking at it objectively, in spite of his brusque remarks, I will have to agree with Siby. He seems to have a very good experience and understanding of the industry in general and his views do reflect the current picture after all.
